The School

The New School was founded in 1972 by a group of parents and teachers who wanted to create an educational environment in which high academic achievement was combined with a close teacher-pupil relationship. The New School remains "new" in its commitment to an on-going process of change and renewal, as pupils come and go and as educational techniques develop.

The New School follows the English National Curriculum and provides nursery, kindergarten, primary and secondary education up to University entrance. The School is recognised by the University of London Examinations and Assessment Council (ULEAC), the University of Cambridge Local Examination Syndicate (UCLES) and the Midland Examining Group (MEG) as an official examination centre.

The School is a non-profit making organisation run by the Academic Council (all staff and seven student representatives) which also elects the headteacher, and by the Executive Council (three elected teachers and four elected parents).

The Environment

Situated twenty minutes from the centre of Rome, the school is housed in a large villa surrounded by a beautiful garden, and has always retained the warm and friendly atmosphere of the family home it originally was.

Growth of the school during recent years has been accommodated by the addition of four purpose-built classrooms to the site. The School has well-stocked libraries, as well as fully equipped biology, chemistry and physics laboratories, extensive computer facilities, an art studio, drama and music room, a five-a-side football pitch, a volleyball pitch and an attractive garden for recreation. The School also uses a nearby swimming pool, a gymnasium and extensive sports facilities at the CUS Roma centre.

Nursery and Kindergarten

In the Nursery and Kindergarten learning takes place through imaginiative play, language games, singing and making music, art and craft and outdoor activities. The day's routine incorporates individual and group play, structured times and periods for individual choice. As children show readiness, they are introduced to appropriate pre-number and pre-reading activites and the use of computers.

Primary Department

A happy and dynamic Primary Department forms the secure foundation from which children will benefit as they progress through the school. Classes are conducted in a friendly, stimulating environment enabling children to gain the maximum from these early, vital years. Individual programmes of work are planned for each child to ensure that he or she receives the help and stimulation necessary to develop his or her full potential.

Children for whom English is a second language receive intensive daily tuition from a specialist to encourage rapid integration in all activities. Art and craft, drama, movement, gymnastics, sport, music, and computer activites are an integral part of the programme and great emphasis is placed on developing the creative talents of the child.

Middle and Senior Schools

The emphasis is on academic excellence aimed at obtaining university entrance qualifications. From Year 10 onwards the course material and examinations are set by the University of London, University of Cambridge and the Midland Examining Group. New School students obtain qualifications enabling them to continue their studies anywhere in the world. Small classes, pupil-centred activites and effective pupil-teacher relationships ensure that every student achieves his or her personal best.

Good behaviour and academic effort are achieved by encouraging self-respect, respect for others and a sense of responsibility to oneself and the community. The school's caring atmosphere ensures that every child or young person is integrated easily and quickly, while a dynamic pastoral system promotes the welfare and development of the individual and enables any problems to be resolved promptly.
